Domestic Violence Intervention Project

DVIP needed a leaflet to explain their services, their social impact and their cost benefits. Programmes for perpetrators of domestic violence are complex interventions, which depend on skilled and specialised staff. I worked with the senior team to define the narrative, wrote the copy and briefed their designer. The result: a professional product that answers key questions and makes the case for investment.

In the face of cutbacks after the spending review,  we needed to reinforce our message to funders about the effectiveness of our work in protecting women and children, and also in saving money in the longer term. Kate understood what was required immediately, and designed and produced a pamphlet which perfectly met what was required, in a very short timescale. We would not hesitate to use her again.

Global Partners & Associates

I work with Global Partners & Associates on communications and freedom of expression, principally on an international research project on human rights and digital communications. For this project, funded by the Ford Foundation, I've carried out focus group evaluations of workshops with non-governmental organisations (in Argentina, Indonesia, Kenya and the UK), developed the project's communications and materials, and edited original research for publication.

I developed a writing skills workshop specifically for Global Partners' staff, focusing on accessible and authoritative writing for business.

We gave Kate the brief that we wanted to improve business report-writing skills in the company. She shaped our requirements into more precise goals and delivered an excellent workshop that helped build a better understanding among staff of how they can work collaboratively to write concise, clear reports for our clients. Feedback was universally positive, and the only complaint was that they wanted more! We'll definitely work with Kate again.

NRAS

I've researched, tested and produced a variety of materials for the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society, a patient-led charity supporting people living with this condition.

We've used Kate for a number of years as editor for our key publications. We operate in a medical health arena where accuracy of information is crucial but, importantly, must be couched in clear, patient-friendly, lay terms. This is sometimes quite a challenge when complex science is being explained, but we have always been delighted with the end result which always meets our standards for quality, which I have to say are pretty exacting.

Some of our publications have won awards and Kate's contribution has been a key factor in the winning. When creating a new publication has involved running qualitative focus groups and interviews, Kate has managed that aspect of the project with friendly efficiency and has always maintained deadlines.

Multiple Sclerosis Society

I carried out a short research programme to help with changes to MS Matters , a lifestyle magazine for people with MS. The MS Society wanted to explore how to reach out to new readers, and how best to present information about the Society's work. The research, which involved members and non-members, helped the MS Society to decide the magazine's future direction and content.

I was a member of the MS Matters editorial board for three years and worked closely with the Editor to plan and commission many issues. I wrote a wide range of articles for people living with MS, and also wrote publications – highly commended by the British Medical Association – about symptoms and their treatments.

Kate's research helped us to come up with plenty of practical ideas for the magazine, and showed us clearly what readers most wanted.

British Society for Rheumatology BSR, a professional medical society, needed an annual report to promote their work to their members. They also wanted a clear process for producing future reports. I drew up a project plan and took the work through the stages: interviews, structure, key messages and copywriting. The result: an authoritative report with a dynamic voice.

Opening quotation mark
Kate's work was excellent and her writing completely exceeded our expectations! We were impressed with how quickly she “got” us and what we were about, and we were delighted with the final report.
